Amazing place, the rooftop right on the beach is definitely something you want to live. Spacious room and clean. And service and the staff were very welcoming.

Do not recommend!
From the moment we checked in, issues started and were never properly addressed. We booked the room that was advertised as oceanfront but was bar front. We paid extra for this and didn’t get it.
The Room & Amenities:
• The AC was not working from the start, and our sliding door didn’t lock to the main bar . We reported both issues, but nothing was done, despite following up multiple times.
• The room had a strong musty/moldy smell, which gave me headaches whenever I was inside. It was far from welcoming.
• The toilet water pressure was embarrassingly bad, and the rain shower barely worked—taking 10 minutes to warm up, with only half of the sprayers functioning. The bathtub was also unusable due to a faulty drain plug and sprayer.
• The TV didn’t work properly due to poor internet, so we couldn’t even use it in the evenings.
• The room was advertised as oceanfront but was actually bar-front, meaning we heard loud music and noise at all hours. Music even started at 7 AM on Sunday.
• The sheets were extremely rough and uncomfortable, and while the pillows were nice, the pillowcases were terrible.
Hotel Conditions & Service:
• The hallway and bar area flooded multiple times during our stay.
• One elevator was out of service, causing long waits.
• The entire hotel felt run-down, with moldy grout, peeling paint, crooked doors, and worn-out furniture.
• Rooms were not soundproof at all—you could hear every noise from the hallway and hotel bar.
Staff & Customer Service:
• While the cleaning staff did an excellent job, the front desk and maintenance staff were unresponsive.
• The bartender initially told us we could charge drinks to our room, but the next day, my husband was accused of walking out on the bill—an incredibly unprofessional experience.
The Positives:
• The cleaning staff was detail-oriented and thorough.
• The restaurant food was good, and the staff there was friendly.
• The location is great, and the rooftop offers a nice view.
Overall, we expected much more from this hotel, especially for a special occasion. The lack of customer service, the deteriorating conditions, and the inconveniences made for a frustrating and uncomfortable stay. We would not recommend The Carmen Hotel and will not be returning. We have received no appropriate response from management even 2 weeks after our stay. Very disappointing.

Fake Websites and Reservations
I tried to book a reservation here but I think there are scam sites.
I got an email with a reservation number and it all looked official - directly off the website Carmenhotel.com. The link in the email to cancel it a broken link, the email address it came from reservations@carmenhotel.com has a bounce back, and there is another email reservas@carmenhotel.com which has not responded.
It would be nice if someone from the hotel could confirm if this is an actual website.
There is also a website www.hotelthecarmen.com/ which also looks fake and it run by Kavia hotels which another reviewer said screwed him over. It has an email of Reservationshotelthecarmen.com which ALSO has a bounce back.
Management of this hotel really needs to address this - hopefully at least reply to this review - and let everyone know how we can actually book, plus they need to shut down the fake websites.

Good but not great
Very nice hotel, large rooms and super friendly staff.
Convenient location is very nice bar by the sea.
A sore note was booking sea view room on booking and find ourselves at a "partial" view (by definition).
It may seem like nothing but it is not since the room no longer has a sea view but is lateral to it ...
Maybe a Booking problem. But I found it very annoying at first.
Then I let it go , even though the booking in my app said sea view .
Breakfast is really scandalous. You can choose from a few dishes and the rest is for a fee and this should also be specified before booking, there is no arriving and being told that 3/4 of the breakfast is for a fee.
You pay for the drinks with 15% discount but then they ask you from 15% tip upwards ...
I've always left her because guys are really loving... But it is a condition that sometimes makes you uncomfortable.
Pool on the top floor with very loud music.
Hotel recommended , but better inquire well about what you want.

The property is well situated within Playa Del Carmen. Being on the the beach was amazing, having breakfast or lunch seconds from your room was great.
