Insulting customer service
Popped into the bar again on Saturday night to order a couple of cocktails. We were served some rather bitter espresso martinis so asked if they could be sweetened up a bit - I appreciate that there are different approaches to knocking one of those together, but what I don’t appreciate is being met with the level of attitude from the young man serving us. The other chap serving very kindly intervened and did something to sweeten them up a bit. He was lovely and made us feel well looked after. Concerned we might have offended our original bar tender, my other half approached the bar and apologised in case he had offended him. He got a rather patronising and sassy response advising him that if he ordered an espresso martini again he should expect anyone to serve the cocktail he had produced and he should specify sugar syrup next time. I’m no sprint chicken and I’ve ordered many an espresso martini - never before have I had to send one back and specify sugar syrup.
Next round I ordered a French martini. What I was given was not a French martini (a French 75 I suspect). I think it was a mistake of the friendly bartender but he wasn’t there when I realised the error. When I went to tell the other guy behind the bar, I was met with the catty remark of ‘I didn’t make it, what do you want me to do about it’. By this point I was fed up so told him I didn’t want anything else, I just didn’t want to pay for it and we left.
As we were coming up to checkout, we realised a bag of food we had bought from the market the previous day was missing from our room. It had been in quite a generic looking white carrier bag and the handles had been tied in such a way that it could have probably been mistaken for rubbish. An annoying realisation for us, given there was about £40 of food in there but mistakes happen. We did hope we might be able to get back though, so alerted the night staff receptionist over the phone. From the conversation, it was clear that someone with a little more authority would have to look into it in the morning but I felt comforted having been told that we’d be reimbursed if the bag had indeed been disposed of.
Come the following morning, we raised the problem again as we went down to breakfast. There was a bit of attitude as we were told ‘nothing had been handed over in the handover note’. And then some kind of investigation ensued. The cleaner was tracked down to give an account. I was repeatedly told by management that the cleaner hadn’t binned the bag. I was given a list of the items they had binned from the room - I assume as some kind of proof that the list was conclusive and the bag was not on the list. Even if we ignore the issue surrounding the bag, it was not an exhaustive list of the rubbish removed from the room so it didn’t fill me with confidence. And more than that, I felt like I was being insulted and there was a clear insinuation that I was lying. I’m not sure I’ve ever had a customer service interaction where I’ve essentially been accused of being a liar. They had convinced themselves we had lost the bag which was clear throughout the interaction. At one point I think she was trying to infer that the cleaner couldn’t have binned the bag because they finished the cleaning shift at 1pm. Well we had returned to the room with the bag at 10.30am and the room had not yet been cleaned. We’d have left again around 11.30am. The room had not yet been cleaned. So that was also a false line of enquiry.
I appreciate that mistakes happen. I can completely appreciate that the cleaner might have mistaken the item for rubbish. I can also appreciate that someone might forget binning a very generic looking carrier bag. What I do not appreciate is the attitude that followed. I felt insulted and like my integrity was being called into question.
In the end we were told they’d refund the breakfasts we had had at the hotel totalling £64 because the two of us had had two days of breakfasts. That wasn’t true either actually. We only had breakfast on the second morning but I couldn’t be bothered correcting her by that point. I assume that means we were reimbursed about £30 of breakfast and given that just about covered the costs of the contents of the bag I just said thanks and left it there. It was clear she found us an inconvenience and her offer was given very begrudgingly.
As an aside, I was quite pleased to have not paid for the breakfasts. It does not warrant the price. My eggs royale were nice enough but my partners full English had some very dry sausages on it. The buffet that accompanied it was pretty lacking and staff weren’t really keeping on top of refilling items as they ran out. I’ve had better breakfasts in much lower cost hotels at much more reasonable prices - would recommend going into Malton to eat elsewhere as there’s plenty to enjoy out and about.
The final minor nuisance was that the front desk was left unmanned around a very popular checkout time. So after all this we were standing around watching the nice woman who had been on the desk now running around with coffee pots. By this point I just really wanted to leave.
We’re lovers of North Yorkshire and have been the Talbot and to others in this chain before. I can say confidently I will not stay here again.

Wonderful location and views
Breakfast room is beautiful and great choice but then salmon came with brown muscle parts - not appetising!
All in all though we would definitely return!
